ECOCARE - Soneva Nature Trip 12

The twelfth ECOCARE – Soneva Nature trip was held from 5 – 11 June 2010. The participants departed from Male’ after a small ceremony to mark the World Environment day 2010. The base camp was set in Baa. Goidhoo. Students from Thaajuhdeen School, Ghiyaasudheen School, Imaadhuhdheen School, Muhuyihdheen School – Villingili, Iskandar School, Kalaafanu School, Jamaaluhdheen School and Fareedhiya School – Hulhumale’ participated in this trip. Participants visited, studied and observed  Soneva Fushi, Olhugiri Island, Fulhadhoo Island, Fehendhoo Island, Innafushi Island, Rahkaarifinolhu, . Participants took part in Reef observation, visited Whale Shark area (close to Soneva), Island study, Mangrove observation and many more.

The eleventh ECOCARE – Soneva Nature trip was held from 6 – 11 June 2009. The base camp was set in Baa. Kendhoo. Students from Thaajuhdeen School, Ghiyaasudheen School, Imaadhuhdheen School, Muhuyihdheen School – Villingili, Iskandar School, Kalaafanu School, Jamaaluhdheen School and Fareedhiya School – Hulhumale’ participated in this trip. Participants visited, studied and observed Kudarikilu Island, Kamandho Island, Soneva Fushi, Thiladhoo Island, Gemendhoo Island, Hulhudhoo Island, Undhoodhoo Island, Vinenehfaru Huraa Island, Bathalaa Huraa Island, Anhenfushi island, and Olhugiri Island. Participants took part in Reef observation, Island study, Mangrove observation and many more.

The tenth ECOCARE – Soneva Nature trip was held from 7 – 12 June 2008. The base camp was set in Baa. Dharavandhoo. Students from Thaajuhdeen School, Ghiyaasudheen School, Imaadhuhdheen School, Muhuyihdheen School – Villingili, Iskandar School, Kalaafanu School, Jamaaluhdheen School and Fareedhiya School – Hulhumale’ participated in this trip. Also Scouts of Dharumavantha School who were camping in Dharavandhoo Island were given a chance to participate in some of the activities. Participants visited, studied and observed Muhdhoo Island, Kihaadhoo Island, Dhonfanu Island, Finalhos Island, Funadhoo Island, Undhoodhoo Island, Hulhudhoo Island, Gemendhoo Island and Olhugiri Island.

The ninth ECOCARE – Soneva Nature trip was held from the 14 – 19 April 2007.  Thaajuhdeen School, Ghiyaasudheen School, Imaadhuhdheen School, Muhuyihdheen School – Villingili, Iskandar School, Kalaafanu School, Jamaaluhdheen School and Fareedhiya School – Hulhumale’ took part. Base camp was setup in Maalhos Island. Participants traveled, studied and observed Un’dudhooIsland, Funadhoo Island, Gemendhoo Island, Olhugiri Island, Kendhoo Island, Eydhafushi Island, Maadhoo Island, Miriyandhoo Island and HIbalidhoo Island. Participants observed and studied Island formation, natural development, Mangrove, Bird watching, Reef observation and many more.

The eighth ECOCARE – Soneva Nature trip was held from the 14 – 19 April 2006. From Male’  Thaajuhdeen School, Ghiyaasudheen School, Immadhuhdheen School, Muhuyihdheen School – Villingili, Iskandar School, Kalaafanu School, Jamaaluhdheen School and Fareedhiya School – Hulhumale’ took part. Also in this Nature trip 3 participants from GN. Atholhu Thauleemee Marukazu – Faumulaku participated along with 4 students of Baa. Maalhohu Madarusa (joining from Baa. atoll). Thulhaadhoo Island was where the base camp was setup.  Participants traveled, studied and observed Gaavilin’gili Island, Maamaduhveri Island, Boadufinolhu Island, Olhugiri Island, Medhufinolhu Island, Ruhdan’du finolhu Island, Kanifushi Island, Hithadhoo Island and Goidhoo Island.

The seventh ECOCARE – Soneva Nature trip was planned and set with all necessary arrangements and expenses made, however due to unusual weather the Ministry of Education did not permit ECOCARE to move ahead with the planned Nature trip. This was the only Nature trip that was canceled. It should be noted that ECOCARE Maldives was committed and more than ready to go ahead with the program if the Ministry would have given the permission.

The sixth trip was organized on 15 – 19 December 2002, for the Maldives Girl Guide Association. The association has more than 4,000 members and is progressing. In enhancing girls and young women in the Maldives they have a very fulfilling programme, which creates awareness among girls and young women in the world around them. Some of the issues targeted by them are the rights and responsibilities, the environment they live in, the life style and culture of their country and other countries, the social needs in the society etc. All these issues are converged in the programme through active participation in projects, and badge work. Since they live in a very fragile environment it is crucial that they are well informed about their environment. A total 150 Guides and Guiders participated in this event from all over the country. (100 participants from atolls and 50 participants from Male’)

The fifth ECOCARE – Soneva Nature trip programme was held in 09 – 13 August 2002. School children and teachers from Jamaaludhdheen School, Ghiyaasudhdheen School, Kalaafaanu School and Muhuyidhdheen participated in this trip. The head of this nature trip was Ms. Hanna Ahmed, Senior assistant principal of Jamaaludhdheen School. Seventy-five participants joined the trip this time. Over 100 plants were planted in Thulhaadhoo. Participants visited Eydhafushi, Thulhaadhoo, Maalhos, Hithaadhoo and Olhagiri where they took part in studying an observing Mangrove Ecosystem, Waste, Natural Vegetation, Beach Erosion and watching the great frigate bird.

The fourth trip was held in April 27-1May 2002. Iskandar School, Immaduddin School and Thaajuddin School students participated.  The head of the trail was Ms. Shahida Mohamed from Thaajuddin School.  The islands visited on this trip were, Goidhoo, Fehendhoo, Fulhadhoo, and Fehen fushi, Maafushi, Olhagiri and Eydhafushi. The activities included study and observation of Goidhoo Mangrove Ecosystem, Waste, Natural Vegetation, Beach Erosion and watching the great frigate bird.  The participants planted more than 50 plants at Goidhoo.  UN volunteers took part as resource persons.  The Honorable Minster of Education Dr. Mohamed Latheef took part on the first day of this particular trip.

A third programme of this project was held 25 -28 August 2001. Participants from Kalaafaan School, Immaduddin School and Qiyaasuddin School participated in this trip. The principal of Imaaduddin School was the head of the trip. Ms. Nahid Shakir who works in the Educational Development Center as curriculum developer participated as resource person and lectured and carried out activities on mangrove ecosystem. The activities on the agenda for this trip were mangrove ecosystem, beach erosion, environment and tourism and biodiversity.  Fifty plants were planted at Baa. Kendhoo.

The honorable Minster of Tourism Mr. Hassan Sabir took part in the first day of the programme.  The honorable Minister, in person, took part in the reef observation with the school children.

In 2001, March 7-9 the second such programme was carried out and pupils from Jamaaludhdheen School, Iskandhar School and Thaajuddin School were the participants.  The head of the trail was the principal of Thaajuddin School Mr. Abudulla Ismail.  An observer from the Ministry of Education officially participated in the programme.  A resource person from the Ministry of Home Affairs Housing and Environment took lecture sessions on coral reef biodiversity.  Activities were carried out at, Daravandhoo, Dhonfanu, Miriyandhoo and Hithaadhoo of Baa Atoll.  The programme included Island-clean up, reef observation, tree plantation, observation of beach erosion and a visit to Olhagiri (roosting island for the great frigate bird) to observe the great frigate bird. Fifty plants were planted at Dharavandhoo on this trip.

ECOCARE - Soneva Nature Trip 1

ECOCARE - Soneva Nature Trip 1

This was the very first ECOCARE – Soneva Nature trip that was held. It was more of a pilot program which included 10 students, 4 teachers and the Principal of Iskandar School from Male’, joined by 30 students, 4 teachers and the Headmaster of Baa Atoll Education Center. Mr. Mohamed Latheef, the director of the Ministry of Public Works in charge of the waste management section lectured as resource person. The activities carried out in this programme were clean-up programme, reef observation programme and a tree plantation programme. Thirty-five plants were planted in Eydhafushi. The participants traveled by chartered aircraft. While the participants were in flight they were given information on how the islands are formed and allowed opportunities to see the islands, sand banks and reefs. This program was fully sponsored by Soneva fushi tourist resort and spa.
